I Am
Exploring the concept of femininity through collage and graphic design
"I Am" is exploration of the concept of femininity using collage and graphic design.
Inspiration
The definition of femininity is ever-changing in today's society. Companies such as Dove and H&M have sought to challenge preexisting definitions by portraying females who are physically stronger, of a sturdier build, and aggressively ambitious (all traditionally masculine traits).
Concept
With the project, I didn't aim to define femininity but rather question it. I wanted to ask what aspects of a human being make a person feminine or masculine, as men and women can be masculine and feminine alike. The final collage displays two women in wedding dresses covered in flowers to represent areas of the body that influence gender: Brain, eyes, heart, breast, genitalia.
Iconography
The graphic icon I have accompanying the collage is meant to represent fertility and the nurturing aspect of femininity. The egg and flower are abstracted and then stylized to look like the top of a king's staff, implying the power of being feminine or female.
